This is an interesting question - and I'm not sure of the answer. But here is what i think based on what I've read .... In order to offset your carbon you have to first calculate it which must be a good thing. It makes you aware of your carbon footprint so that you can then start thinking about how to avoid producing so much carbon and also reducing it using effiecency methods. Then maybe try and offset the things you can't reduce. I think it's important to use a quaility assured carbon offset. You can calculate your carbon footprint here: http://carboncalculator.direct.gov.uk/index.html

Hi there.... This website may be of some use to you. It shows a variety of job sectors that focus on supporting the green movement and then lists different types of jobs that are available: http://www.environmentjob.co.uk/

needs help with I'd like to look into some motivational business speakers who focus on management ideas of how and why it is important for businesses to lead the way towards a low carbon and more sustainable future. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations?
5 months agoneeds help with I have just graduated with a BSc in Architecture with Environmental Design and I was wondering what opportunities were out there for me without doing further studying?
3 months agoneeds help with I need help building my resume. I assume the one i have already is not adequate. I also need help figuring out what jobs to apply for and what companies i should be looking at
5 months agoHi When you say that your resume isn't adequate I am assuming that you feel it hasn't done you any favours on the getting a job front. I'm not an expert and without seeing it I cannot comment on your particular resume but I do get to see a lot from young poeple and here are few thoughts. Most people have a huge range of skills and assets to offer its just a case of making them stand out. Have a look at other people that you know and see what they have done but be yourself and make sure that you get across your unique qualities. Don't give up, its hard being young in a job market full of experience but its very rare that persistance and a 'go get it attitude' remains unrewarded for long. The other thing to note is that just because you weren't the right person for that particular job it doesn't mean that you were in any way second best, I have had to turn away perfectly capable applicants just because they aren't quite who we needed at that time so don't give up! Good luck, the more doors you push against the more likely one will swing wide open for you. Bran

needs help with What sort of skills and experience do graduates need in order to lead the transition to a low carbon economy?
7 months agoAre there carbon literacy websites/courses etc already out there and are they "student-friendly"?

Hi Daisy - its also worth checking out the kind of skills that industry expects to be in short supply as we move forward into the low carbon economy. For example in order to come up with solutions to the challenges we face we will need more engineers so science, maths, technology and engineering could be an area of focus. It might be worth reading the Mind the Gap report which looks at this, http://www.aldersgategroup.org.uk/reports/ . I am not sure where your personal interests lie with regard to future careers but it is possible for just about any job or career to support our transition to the low carbon economy as every skill will be needed to do all the things we do today, but in a low carbon and more sustainable way :-)

Thank you Jon and Lindsey for both those links - they are really useful. I found a link to the One Planet MBA, ran by the Exeter Business School and WWF, which was particularly interesting and relevant to the sort of thing I am hoping to do with my university society. In your experience, are students aware of the scale of the challenges that businesses face and the importance of developing this awareness and skills for their future careers?

Hi Daisy. One of our colleagues uses the phrase 'parlez-vous carbon' as he thinks that carbon literacy and being able to understand the concepts behind carbon management will be key. It's also really worthwhile being able to understand the business opportunities that the 'green sector' represents andbeing able to communicate why this stuff is important- not just as niche environmentalism but as a central part of how companies do business now and in the future.

Hi. Check out www.clearaboutcarbon.com Although it's cornwall focussed you might find the Carbon Jargon Buster particularly useful- it will help you to 'parlez' with the best of them! There's not much around in the form of formal carbon training yet but it's definitely a growing sector
