Hi there.... This website may be of some use to you. It shows a variety of job sectors that focus on supporting the green movement and then lists different types of jobs that are available: http://www.environmentjob.co.uk/

needs help with I'm about to start studying Landscape Architecture - what's the best way to get a career working on projects like the Eden Project?
7 months agoHi there! Large scale landscape architecture projects are not that uncommon – particularly when working with internationally known firms. However, working on projects that emphasise a botanic collection are less common and are perhaps a more niche landscape architecture domain. There is always an element of being in the “right place at the right time” when it comes to gaining opportunities to work on distinctive, world renowned projects. However, to be involved with botanic garden landscape design there is one key component that will help put you ahead of the rest: knowing your plants! Now, during your course and as a graduate, put equal if not greater emphasis on knowing a comprehensive range of plant species at all strata of growth – ground layer, shrub layer and trees to match a range of soil and climate conditions. This will help you assess how the hard landscape elements interrelate with their surroundings and the softer elements which shoudl give you an edge over other candidates. I hope this helps and enjoy the course :-)

needs help with Career change, how do I go about getting a job in the social enterprise / charity / green sector having come from a commercial background?
7 months agoThis is a good question. I think you need to get as much work experience as you can. You might need to look into doing some volunteering for the kinds of organisations you would like to work for. Thats a good way to get you foot in the door. Also its worth getting it very clear in your head why you would want to work for these organisations - understand their ethos and mission statement.

I think your commercial background should be a real asset. I now work here at Eden after about 15 years of working in financial services and other industries in the big smoke so its definitely possible! For me it was about looking in the right places for the kind of roles i was interested in and ensuring i had the relevant experience. I am a programme manager and had years of experience of managing big programmes and client relationships and wanted to use those skills in a different sector - it is harder if you are looking to find a different kind of role to the one you do now but if you focuss on skills (rather than job titles) you will find lots you can apply for. Include relevant experience in your application and find out as much about the organisation as you can so you can tone and tailor your application in the right way to stand out. Competition is generally higher and pay could be lower than a commercial equivalent so you need to be prepared for some of that. You will need to show why that particular organisation is of interest to you so I would target specific organisations you have a real interest in as this really comes across if someone hasn't thought about it. The Guardian has a good jobs page on a Wednesday (I think!) which is all focussed on the sector you are interested in so its worth a browse to see what kind of thing is out theer. Robbie's suggestion of volunteering is also a great one - not only does it show your commitment but often you'll meet people and hear about roles that you may be able to apply for - happy job hunting!
